Orthopaedic Surgeon and Fracture Specialist

Joseph T. Patterson, MD, FACS, FAAOS is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in fracture care and limb deformity solutions. He is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery (Clinical Scholar) at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Patterson received his bachelor's degree in Bioengineering summa cum laude at the University of California Los Angeles. He completed a doctorate in medicine with thesis in tissue engineering at Yale University, followed by his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California San Francisco and an advanced clinical experience fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Patterson believes in developing personalized, evidence-based care to help patients recover after as fully as possible from their injuries and limb differences.

Research and Scholarship

Dr. Patterson is an award-winning clinical investigator dedicated to advancing healthcare for musculoskeletal trauma. As primary investigator, he has lead international, multicenter, randomized clinical trials comparing treatments for patients with fractures of the hip and pelvis. He has served on the Strategic Research Initiative for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and collaborates as a site investigator with the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium. Dr. Patterson's research has been supported by funding from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, National Science Foundation, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, AO North America, Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, and James O. Johnston Foundation. His research contributions to orthopaedic care have been recognized with an Early Career Development Award from AO North America as well as Young Investigator Awards from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, AO North America, and Western Orthopaedic Association
